With more than 20 years of experience in health care and life sciences, he has held senior roles, including at Alere (now Abbott Rapid Diagnostics), where he developed the Alere i platform, the first CLIA-waived point-of-care diagnostic using DNA amplification. He also founded Cambridge Consultants' bioinnovation group and was vice president of technology at DNA Electronics. Hammond earned his master's of engineering and master's of arts degrees from the University of Cambridge in Cambridge, United Kingdom.
