Neopac, a company based in Switzerland that provides packaging and dosing solutions for pharmaceutical, oral, and beauty care, will unveil at CPHI Milan its new mono-material barrier (MMB) mini tubes, with the brand name of Polyfoil, the company announced in a press release on Sept. 30, 2024 (1).

“Our new Polyfoil MMB mini tubes reflect Neopac's ongoing commitment to innovative packaging that meets the highest standards of product protection and performance, while incorporating eco-friendly elements,” said Martina Christiansen, Neopac director of sales tubes, in the press release. “We’re excited to showcase the new tubes at CPHI Milan, providing an ideal platform for engaging with the global pharmaceutical community and demonstrating our commitment to versatile solutions even for sensitive formulations.”

The tubes are available in “downsized” diameters of 13.5 to 16 mm, Neopac said, and are an expansion of the company’s high-barrier, mono-material solutions with a focus on sustainability (1). The aluminum-free tubes, constructed with food- and pharma-grade materials compliant with mono-material packaging regulations, support products that require strong barrier properties, including those in the pharmaceutical, dental, and ophthalmic areas, according to Neopac. The company also said the tubes have an “excellent” oxygen transmission rate barrier and can be combined with high-density polyethylene closures.

An array of closures—such as tamper-evident or child-resistant—is available with the Polyfoil tubes to suit various applications and customer needs, Neopac said. A dropper insert is included for precise dosing of liquid formulas. Aesthetically, the tubes have metallic body options, an invisible side seam, hot foil stamping, and printing that remains legible until the tubes are emptied (1).

The Polyfoil MMB mini tubes are manufactured at Neopac’s state-of-the-art facility in Oberdiessbach, Switzerland, which utilizes both hydroelectric and solar power to run entirely on clean energy (1). The facility’s International Sustainability & Carbon Certification Plus designation allows Neopac to reduce its carbon footprint and avoid eco-taxes while simultaneously ensuring safety and maintaining the quality of its products, according to the company.

In 2022, Hoffman Neopac Group, the parent company of Neopac, became the first tube manufacturer to sign a partnership with Saperatec, the first industrial recycling plant for aluminum laminate composites, announcing an intent to supply production waste to Saperatec upon the plant’s opening (2).

"With this new initiative, we will offer our customers the best possible balance between product safety and sustainability," Peter Bossert, head of materials development at Hoffmann Neopac, said at the time of the partnership signing . "With the pending recycling of ABL [aluminum barrier laminate] tubes, we are closing a recycling gap in our portfolio."

The Sept. 30, 2024 press release said that the MMB mini tubes have reduced weight and a lower carbon dioxide footprint compared to Polyfoil aluminum barrier tubes (1).

CPHI Milan will convene from Oct. 8–10, 2024, and Neopac’s exhibit featuring the Polyfoil MMB mini tubes can be found at Booth 20F31 (1).
