Evonik opened a new facility for GMP manufacturing of bioresorbable polymers and excipients for pharmaceutical and medical applications in Birmingham, AL.
Evonik announced in a May 13, 2020 press release that it had commissioned a new GMP manufacturing facility in Birmingham, AL to support increased demand for the use of its Resomer bioresorbable polymers in parenteral drug products and implantable medical devices. With the expansion, Evonik will also begin to provide contract manufacturing organization (CMO) services for companies to outsource scale-up and commercial manufacturing of their own proprietary excipients.
The new, 2800-m2 facility is equipped with multiple cleanrooms, reactors, purification and micronization systems, and other ancillary equipment. The new site is adjacent to an existing CDMO facility that offers a range of formulation development and GMP-manufacturing services for parenteral drug products and application development and scale-up services for implantable medical devices. The facility is part of the Health Care business line, which is part of Evonik’s Nutrition & Care segment.
The company has harmonized the equipment and processes at the Birmingham facility with its other main biomaterials facility in Darmstadt, Germany, which allows the company to offer dual-sourcing to its customers for improved supply security.
