The authors compare three systems of single-screw extrusion (i.e., radial, dome, and axial) using binary formulations (i.e., microcrystalline cellulose, and active material) for their suitability for producing pellets of various formulations and under various spheronization conditions. Pellets were characterized by their size and shape, and by their structural and mechanical properties. The experimental design showed high variation between the three extrusion systems.
