Improving bioavailability of poorly water-soluble drugs is an ongoing challenge for formulation scientists and is of crucial importance to advance clinically promising drug candidates. A Pharmaceutical Technology webcast, Bioavailability Enhancement through Lipid-Based Drug Delivery, will examine advances in lipid-based drug delivery systems for enhancing the bioavailability of absorption-limited small and large molecules.

Strategies for addressing the challenges posed by these drugs will be discussed, such as designing formulations to maintain drug solubility, increase permeability, target lymphatic transport, bypass first pass metabolism, and mitigate food effects as well as in-vitro methodologies that can be used to predict their in-vivo performance. Given that lipid-based drug-delivery systems are most often delivered orally using softgel technology, this webcast will also discuss the manufacture of softgels and recent advances in softgel technology, including the use of vegetable-based capsule systems.

Among the panelists will be Anette Muellertz, PhD, Associate Professor and Head of Bioneer–FARMA, Danish Drug Development Center, the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences (FARMA), University of Copenhagen, Denmark and head of the AAPS Lipid-Based Drug Delivery Systems Focus Group.
