The Novelia system has been approved as a packaging component and delivery system of multidose drug product formulated without preservatives.
Nemera, a provider of drug delivery solutions, announced that its Novelia system has been approved as a packaging component and delivery system of multidose drug product formulated without preservatives. According to the company, Novelia is the first and only preservative-free multidose eyedropper approved in the UK for a new glaucoma drug product.
“This approval sets an important milestone for Novelia” said Fanny Sellier, category manager of Nemera, in a press statement. “We’re excited to make it easier for UK patients to use preservative-free glaucoma drugs”
Preservatives are often added to formulations in multidose eyedroppers to maintain the safety of the product. These preservatives, however, are known to cause allergies or ocular irritation, and some can even cause a toxic response that is damaging to the eye. Such reactions can pose problems to patients relying on the long-term use of eye drops for chronic conditions, such as glaucoma.
An alternative to keeping eyedroppers free from contamination without the use of preservatives is to prevent the entry of bacteria into the bottle. Nemera has developed Novelia, a multidose eyedropper consisting of a non-return valve system, used in conjunction with a silicone membrane to filter the returning air. The Novelia multidose closing tip system avoids the need for preservatives in the drug and prevents bacterial contamination over the duration of treatment.
